Honoring Earth Day at the Library

Earth Day is April 22, 2012.  The library is hosting the following events in honor of Earth Day.

Earth Day Book Talk find out what books and movies the SSC Public Library has in their collection dealing with Earth Day type ideas on Wednesday night April 18th at 6:30pm.

Earth Day Library Clean-up Sunday April 22 is Earth Day and the library is looking for volunteers to help clean-up the outside of the library. Bring gloves, pruning shears, wheel barrels, etc to help pick up trash, trim bushes and trees and improve the look of the library. We will gather at the library at 1pm in the NW parking lot.

Classic Movie and Discussion In this film:  "Silent movies are giving way to talking pictures, and a hoofer-turned-matinee idol is caught in that bumpy transition, as well as his buddy, prospective ladylove and shrewish co-star"--Container.  The Movie and Discussion program will be held on April 17th at 7pm.

Real to Reel Replay The story of Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players.  The Real to Reel Replay will be held on Saturday April 21st at 2 pm.

Gaming Day for Adults Sudoku:  Whether you have done Sudoku for a long time, or you are new to Sudoku, join us on Friday April 20th at 1pm.

Technology Classes:  The library offers multiple technology classes each week to assist you in learning valuable skills.

Windows Basics:  Monday April 16, 5pm: Windows Basics: We will start at the very beginning of Windows 7 with an introduction to the Desktop, Start Menu and the all new Taskbar.

Microsoft Publisher 3:  Monday April16, 6pm: Microsoft Publisher 3:  Learn how to create a variety of documents using Microsoft Publisher.

Your Library Online Catalog:  Tuesday April 17, 5:30pm: Your Library Online Catalog: This is a broad overview of information and services available on the library webpage.  The focus is on using the online catalog.

Microsoft Word 2:  Wednesday April 18, 11am: Microsoft Word 2: We will add to our knowledge from Word 1 and expand a little bit more. We will discuss the ruler, insert/overtype, cut and paste, using the clipboard, and paragraph styles.

EBook Readers:  Wednesday April 18, 1pm & 6pm:  E-book Readers: Covers what an e-Book reader is and provides hands on demonstration of some of the different kinds. Also teaches how to use Overdrive, a way to get e-Books through the Library.

Search Engines:  Wednesday April 18, 2pm: Search Engines: Covers some of the search engines other than Google, Yahoo and Bing.  Students will learn about Collarity, Ixquick, and

Everything Google:  Thursday April 19, 5pm: Everything Google: Welcome to the wonderful world of Google.  Learners will discover some about Gmail, iGoogle, Google Documents, Google calendar, Google Books and more.

Youth Activities:  We have multiple activities for our youth each week:  Preschool Story Time Tuesday 10am and Wednesday at 4pm, Pat-a-Cake Pals Time Thursday morning at 10am, Family Story Time Thursday at 6:30pm, & Toddler Time Friday at 10am.

Tax Day Approaches:  April 17 is the due date for Federal Income Taxes.  If you need some last minute forms, the library has all the basic 1040 forms, to get a more complete access to needed tax forms go to and click on Income Tax Center.  This has links to the IRS, Nebraska Department of Revenue, Iowa Department of Revenue and links to find forms all the states in the United States.
