School Enrollment Days at the Library
The library will once again host multiple Helping Hands school enrollment sessions at the library. The following are the sessions scheduled at the library: August 6th 11am-1pm, August 7th 11am-1pm, August 9th 4pm-7pm and August 11th 10am-2pm.
Joe Starita, Author of “I Am a Man” Speaks at SSC Library
Joe Starita , the author of “I Am a Man: Chief Standing Bear’s Journey for Justice", Nebraska's reading choice for the 2012 One Book One Nebraska statewide reading program, will speak at the South Sioux City Public Library on Saturday August 11th at 2pm.
Standing Bear: How an Indian Chief Set Off on a 600-Mile Journey to Bury His Son and Ended Up Beating the U.S. Army in a Federal Courtroom discusses the legal, social and political importance of the landmark 1879 decision in which a judge declared that Ponca Chief Standing Bear was "a person" within the meaning of the law and entitled to the same Constitutional protections as white citizens.
Before joining the journalism faculty in 2000, Starita spent 13 years at the Miami Herald, where he served as the paper's
bureau chief from 1983-1987. Interested in
American Indian history and culture since his youth, Starita returned to his
in 1992 and began work on a three-year book project about five generations of
an Indian family. "The Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge - A Lakota Odyssey"
was published in 1995, has been translated into six foreign languages and was
nominated for a Pulitzer Prize Nebraska
This One Book One Nebraska event is made possible through the Nebraska Humanities Council. The Nebraska Humanities Council (NHC) provides major funding for this program. The NHC receives support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Nebraska State Legislature, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment and private donations.

This month’s real to real is set in small town

campaign to save a family of gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle. Real to Reel is shown on Thursday
August 9th at 6pm and Saturday August 18th at 2pm.
Microsoft Excel 2: Did you know that Excel has a way to input math calculations right on your worksheet? There are ways to edit the cells in the worksheet such as alignments, borders, font changes, background, etc, on Monday August 6th at 5pm.
Facebook Basics: This class will help you get up to speed on how to create, use and maintain a Facebook page of your own and understanding the privacy policies and settings, on Monday August 6th at 6pm.
Windows Basics 3: Did you know that you can Aero Peek, Snap and Shake on your computer? If you don't know what we am talking about, stop in and let us show you some new ways of working with Windows to make it more productive, on Tuesday August 7th at 5:30pm.
Know Your Computer: Would you like to learn the very basics of your computer? How about increase you computer vocabulary? This class will teach the very basics of computer knowledge. It will let you feel confident in knowing what all the components are on your computer, on Wednesday August 8th at 11am.
Microsoft Publisher 1: Microsoft Publisher is a basic course covering the types of documents that can be created, how to modify templates and how to insert text and images, on Wednesday August 8th at 2pm.
Everything Google: in this class we will look at the major pieces of the puzzle of the Google platform including Google Search, Google +, Google Play, Google Drive etc, on Thursday August 9th at 5pm.
We have a full list of youth activities: Preschool Story Time Tuesday at 10am & Wednesday at 4pm, Pat-a-Cake Pals Thursday at 10am, Family Story Time at 6:30pm and Toddler Time Friday at 10am.
