Homestead Education at the Library

Tomato Tasting Contest: Whether you grow Beef steak, Cherry, Roma or other tomatoes brands; you will want to participate in the library’s tomato tasting contest, this will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday September 5th.

Homesteading Book Talk: Library Director, Dave Mixdorf will hold a presentation on the materials available at the library. This is held on Tuesday September 10th at 6:30 p.m.

Cover to Cover to Discuss The Godfather On September 9th Cover to Cover book club will discuss Books 1-3 of The Godfather by Mario Puzo.  The Godfather is an iconic book that inspired three movies and countless movies with the mafia motif, but none has surpassed the power of the original.   Cover to Cover meets at 6:30 p.m.

Tangled Yarns sewing group meets at 6:30 p.m.  each Tuesday night.  Join us for an evening of fun, conversation, and creating.

Real to Reel:  The September Real to Reel Movie is on Thursday night September 12th at 6:00 p.m.  In this month’s movie, a Midwestern war veteran finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbor.-from, The movie stars Leonardo DiCapprio, with music soundtracks from Jay-Z, James Brown, Kanye West and much more.

Technology Classes:  The following is the schedule for our technology classes this week:  Windows Basic 2 (Tuesday September 10th at 10:00 a.m.); E-Book Reader (Tuesday September 10th at 12:00 p.m., and Thursday September 12th at 6:00 p.m.); Microsoft Word 1 (Tuesday September 10th at 2:00 p.m.); Keyboard and Mouse Skills (Tuesday September 10th at 3:00 p.m.); Powerpoint 1 (Tuesday September 10th at 4:00 p.m.); Powerpoint 2 (Tuesday September 10th at 5:30 p.m.);   Pinterest (Wednesday September 11th at 10:00 a.m.); Mango Languages Wednesday September 11th at 5:30 p.m.); and Setting Up an E-mail Account (Thursday September 12th at 10:00 a.m.).

Remembering 9/11:  September 11, 2013 marks the twelth anniversary of the 9/11 events that have shaped the current culture.  In memory of the event, we offer these reading suggestions.

9/11:  A Graphic Adaptaation by Sid jacobsen  is a readable, memorable adaptation of the original 9/11 Commission Repor,  The graphic format allows the book to provide detailed charts and timelines of the 9/11 events.

Ghost Wars:  the Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and bin Laden from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001 is by award-winning author Steve Coll, tells the complex story that drew the United States into involvement with Afghan politics and eventually led to arming, our future opponents.

The Looming Tower:  Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 by Lawrence Wright is a sweeping narrative history of the events leading to 9/11, a groundbreaking look at the people and ideas, the terrorist plans and the Western intelligence failures that culminated in the assault on America. Lawrence Wright’s remarkable book is based on five years of research and hundreds of interviews that he conducted in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sudan, England, France, Germany, Spain, and the United States
