Last Words Author Speaks at the South Sioux City Public Library

The following is the weekly column that we publish in the Dakota County Star.  We thank them for the support of the South Sioux City Public Library and it's programs.



Last Words Author Speaks at the Library
Frederick Blanch, author of Last Words will be at the library on Thursday June 19th at 6:00 p.m.
Last Words is a moving, charming, hilarious story of the author’s life. The book has been nominated for the Minnesota Book Awards.  He has also been characterized as Minnesota’s Mark Twain for nonfiction.
During this evening the author will speak, take questions, and sign books.  

Big Library Read Book Discussion:  Participants in the Big Library Read will meet on Monday night, June 16th at 6:30 p.m.  They will discuss A Pedigree to Die For by Laurien Berenson.  The book is a humorous mystery about a murder and the abduction of a prize-winning poodle.  You can obtain your e-book copy of this title at http://nebraska.lib.overdrive.com/7D7A4829-B262-4C9F-95AD-7E03D067D8D9/10/50/en/Default.htm.  The title will be available until June 18th.

SRP Youth Activities:  The youth department is in full swing this week, with these activities.

CD Color Spinner:  Colors "mixing" together to create different colors! For Early Lit Ages on June 16th at 12:00 p.m.

Soap Clouds:  We can't hold clouds in our hands, but we will create look-a-likes! For Elementary Ages is held on Wednesday June 18th at 1:30 p.m.

Science with Melissa - Bug out:  Make your own dragonfly & edible dirt cup For Elementary Ages.  This program is held on Thursday June 19th at 6:00 p.m.

We also have: Preschool Story Time on Monday June 16th at 1:30 p.m.; Night of FUN on Tuesday June 17th at 6:30 p.m.; Preschool Story Time on Wednesday June 18th at 9:30 a.m. & 4:30 p.m.; Pat-a-Cake Pals on Thursday June 19th at 10:00 a.m.; and Toddler Time on Friday June 20th at 10:00 a.m.

Real to Reel Movie (Tuesday June 17th at 6:30 p.m.):  George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Bill Murray star in an unlikely World War II platoon is tasked to rescue art masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their owners.

Tangled Yarns (Tuesday June 17th at 6:30 p.m.):  Tangled Yarns is a group who enjoys doing needlework and learning new techniques.

Blood Drive is on Wednesday June 18th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Windows Basics (Monday June 16th at 5:00 p.m.):  We will start at the very beginning of Windows 7 with an introduction to the Desktop, Start Menu and the all new Taskbar.

Excel 3 (Tuesday June 17th at 10:00 a.m.): If you need to insert a chart into an Excel worksheet, this class will teach you how. We will also talk about page breaks and printing your document.

Keyboard & Mouse Skills (Tuesday June 17th at 2:00 p.m.):  Double-click, Right-click, Scroll… If you get overwhelmed by knowing what all to do and when to do it with your computer mouse, step into this class and learn! Your mouse and keyboard are the ways you communicate with your computer; the more you know the more you can make your computer work for you!

Excel 1 (Tuesday June 17th at 2:00 p.m.):  Trying to make a spreadsheet? Need a little starting guidance? We can help. We will teach all about the worksheets in Excel, how to move around the worksheet, all about the cells in the worksheet (cut copy paste) inserting rows/columns, and saving all your hard work.

Yahoo Messenger (Tuesday June 17th at 4:00 p.m.):  Do you have friends or family that live so far away you never get to see them. Yahoo Messenger provides you the opportunity to keep in contact with them for free. Yahoo Messenger is a free instant messaging program that allows you to visually see, talk to and even sends text messages to individuals all over the world. This class will teach you how to set up an account and what type of equipment you will need for your computer.

Clean-up Your Computer (Wednesday June 18th at 5:30 p.m.):  Is your computer running slower? Do pop-ups keep appearing? Does your computer randomly crash or freezes up? Then this may be the class for you. Clean up Your Computer shows you how to maintain your computer on both the outside and the inside. Learn what basic procedures and what free software you can use to improve the performance of your computer.

Search Engines (Thursday June 19th at 10:00 p.m.):  Covers some of the search engines other than Google, Yahoo and Bing.  Students will learn about Collarity, Ixquick, Ask.com and Local.com.

Publisher 1, 2, & 3:  On Thursday June 19th, we will spend three class sessions dealing with Microsoft Publisher.  At 11:00 a.m., we will cover the documents that you can create how to modify templates, as well as inserting texts and images.  At 2:00 p.m., we will spend more in depth time modifying templates.  Finally, at 3:30 p.m. we will spend our time creating documents.

E-book Reader classes will be held on Monday June 16th at 3:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m.; Tuesday June 17th at 12:30 p.m.; and Thursday June 19th at 6:00 p.m.

Tech Thursday is on Thursday June 19th at 5:00 p.m.  Bring your technology questions and we will help you find answers.
