Books on the Go at the Library

The following is the weekly column that the library writes for the Dakota County Star newspaper.  We thank them for supporting the library.

Books on the Go at the Library
Labor Day is the last big summer holiday.  The library staff will be home on Monday September 1st, to enjoy the holiday.  We will be open on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  We will reopen on Tuesday September 2nd at 9:00 a.m.  Have a happy and safe holiday weekend. 

Before your weekend activities begin, stop by the library for a good book, audiobook, or music CD.

Fiction Books
The following are some of our all time most recent Audiobooks available for checkout this weekend.

Liberty 1784 by Robert Conroy is an alternate history of the American Revolution that in real life ended in 1783.

Hold Me in Contempt by Wendy Williams.  When lawyer Kimberly Kind and her man King's pasts come back with a vengeance, only their love and passion for each other can save them.

The Bridegroom by Linda Lael Miller is a western romance set in Arizona.  It is the next in the Stone Creek series.

Next we have some of our newest audio CDs to recommend.

Trouble in Mind:  the Collected Stories volume 3 by Jeffrey Deaver delivers suspense in short fiction.

Fluke:  A novel or I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings by Christopher Moore is a Today Show selection.

My Accidental Jihad:  a memoir by Krista Bremer is the story of the author’s experience falling in love and marrying a Muslim, raising children with Arabic names in the American South and the profound ways that her marriage changed her perception of the world.  “It is the story of a bicultural marriage; and aren't all marriages bicultural? How a person responds to difference is what shapes the family, communities, and the world.”

Music CDs
Music goes with everything summer.  Here are a few of our newest titles.

10, Towns by the Eli Young Band is part of the new country music genre.

Shatter Me by Lindsay Stirling is electronic pop/rock from a You Tube sensation.
A Dotted Line by Nickel Creek is another new contemporary country CD available at the library.
Book Sale:  If you want to purchase your books to go, our monthly book sale is on Saturday, August 30th at 10:00 a.m.

Tangled Yarns meets on Tuesday September 2nd at 6:30 p.m.

Youth Programming:  Night of FUN Tuesday 6:30 p.m., Preschool Story Time 9:30 a.m. & 4:30 p.m., Pat-a-Cake Pals Thursday at 10:00 a.m., and Toddler Time Friday at 10:00 a.m.

Redbird Classic Tomato & Salsa Tasting Contest:  The library will hold the Redbird Classic Tomato & Salsa Tasting contest on September 11th at 6:00 p.m.  The tomato categories are:  red slicing, yellow/ gold slicing, other colors slicing, cherry, plum/ grape, and paste.  Salsa categories are mild and hot.  For more information, you can visit the library website for details.

Our Prairie Heritage:  Diane Blankenship will speak on “Our Prairie Heritage” on Wednesday September 10th at 6:30 p.m. at the Library

"Our Prairie Heritage" - a program that is part of "Iowa" Prairie Heritage Week. Historic photos will be presented and also up-to-date images regarding prairies and native plants in Iowa and Nebraska.

Diane Blankenship is a prairie preservationist and natural historian who is associated with the Iowa Prairie Network and with her husband Bill, guided the development of the Garden of Discovery at the Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Ms. Blankenship has collected historic nature images of the Iowa prairie, as well as her contemporary photos.  Her presentation shed new life on our prairie heritage, as well as our current state of our prairie environment.

Library Eats is on September 11th at 6:30 p.m., when we learn to make fresh salsa.

Club 745.5 will meet on Thursday September 18th at 6:30 p.m. and Friday September 19th at 10:30 a.m., where they will learn to make soap.

Writer to Writer is proud to host Marci Broyhill , who will speak on “Writing for Performance” on Saturday September 20th at 10:00 a.m.  Hour two we will share some of the work that we are doing.

Cover to Cover will discuss the book Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins on September 8th at 3:00 p.m.  They will watch a movie on September 22nd at 3:00 p.m.
