Social Security is one of those central programs that touch’s everyone. Whether one receives benefits, or pays benefits, this meeting is something no one wants to miss.

“my Social Security” Sign-up: On Thursday August 14th, at 3:30 p.m. Ric Kromenhoek of the local Social Security office will demonstrate how to sign-up for the my Social Security program. The purpose of the, “my Social Security” website is to allow you to easily switch from mail to direct deposit; change your address, or get a benefit verification letter.
If you are not currently receiving benefits you will be able to estimate your retirement, disability, or survivor’s benefits; check your earnings to make sure what Social Security has stated is correct; and estimate the Social Security taxes you have paid.
It is important for everyone to sign up for my Social Security to make sure you receive the benefits that are due to you.
Library Eats: Vegetarian Cooking: is held on Thursday August 14th at 6:30 p.m. Vegetarian cooking is growing in popularity every day. Drop your preconceived notions and discover the joy of cooking and eating vegetarian.
Cover to Cover to discuss The Hunger Games: Cover to Cover book club will discuss the popular young adult novel, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins at 3:00 p.m. on Monday August 11th.
Tangled Yarns is a group who loves to do needle work. Whether you crochet, knit, do needle point, or any other type of needle work, join us on Tuesday night, August 12th at 6:30 p.m.
Youth Activities: Summer Reading Program is over, but we continue to have excellent programming for youth. On Monday we have Preschool Story Time at 1:30 p.m. and Movie Matinee at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday we have Night of FUN at the Library at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday we offer Preschool Story Time at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Pat-a-Cake Pals is held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Toddler time is held each Friday at 10:00 a.m. Finally, the Saturday Movie Matinee is shown at 11:00 a.m.
Cartooning in the Digital Age is a cartooning workshop that will be held at the South Sioux City Public library on August 26th at 6:00 p.m.
“Cartooning in the Digital Age is a two-hour program by veteran cartoonist Bill Barnes (Unshelled, Not Invented Here). The first part, The Basics of Cartooning, is a fast and fun workshop for middle schoolers through adult, covering every step in creating a comic strip: creating memorable characters, writing dialog, lettering, pencilling, inking, and coloring. The second part, The Technology and Business of Cartooning, is oriented towards mature teens and adults. Bill demonstrates how to use computers to create and publish comic strips to the Internet, and how to make money doing it.”- from Bill Barnes.
Writer to Writer Begins September 20th: Writer to Writer writer’s group begins its fall programming on Saturday September 20th at 10:00 a.m. Marci Broyhill will begin our programming with Writing for Performance. Marci is a cowboy poetry performance artist, who has performed in many venues. She has also published two spoken word CDs. Learn how to research, write and perform your own work. The second hour of the meeting we will use to discuss the work we are doing, as well as share information on writing opportunities in the area.
We also have Nancy Gillis in October who will speak on writing winning book reviews. In November Alicia Rudnicki will speak on starting and editing a magazine. Each of these meetings takes place on the third Saturday of each month at 10:00 a.m. If you would like more information, contact Dan Nieman for more details.
Technology Classes: We have another robust week of technology classes. Monday has E-book Reader at 3:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. and Windows 2 at 5:00 p.m.
On Tuesday August 12th we have Know Your Computer at 10:00 a.m., E-Book Reader 12:30 p.m., Microsoft Excel 2 at 2:00 p.m., and Microsoft Excel 3 at 3:00 p.m.
Finally on August 13th we offer Setting up an Email Account at 10:00 a.m., Search Engines at 2:00 p.m., Facebook for Business at 3:30 p.m., Tech Thursday at 5:00 p.m., and e-book reader class at 6:00 p.m.
