Remembering Robin Williams at the Library

The following is the column that is published each week at the Dakota County Star.  Thanks to them for their support of our work in the community.

Exploring the Oceans:  Monday & Saturday Matinees: This week we focus on the beauty of the oceans in our Monday Matinee.   The movie features an exhilarating look under the sea through the eyes of those that live there. Incredible state-of-the-art-underwater filmmaking will take viewers breath away as they migrate with whales, swim alongside a great white shark, and race with dolphins at play. Watch this movie on Monday August 18th at 4:00 p.m. and Saturday August 23rd at 11:00 a.m.

August Real to Reel Movie:  Join us for a story of four Navy SEALs sent on an ill-fated covert mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative. They are ambushed by enemy forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. The movie will be shown on Tuesday August 19th at 6:00 p.m. & Saturday August 23rd at 2:00 p.m.

745.5 Club:  The 745.5 Club will work on Clay Creations on Thursday night, August 21st at 6:30 p.m. and Friday August 22nd at 10:30 a.m.

Tangled Yarns is a group of needle crafters, who do all sorts of crafts and are at all levels of expertise.  Join them on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.

Youth Activities:  We have Preschool Story Time on Monday at 1:30 p.m., Night of FUN on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., Preschool Story Time 9:30 a.m. & 4:30 p.m., Pat-a-Cake Pals Thursday at 10:00 a.m. and Toddler Time on Friday at 10:00 a.m.

Cartooning in the Digital Age is a cartooning workshop that will be held at the South Sioux City Public library on August 26th at 6:00 p.m.
“Cartooning in the Digital Age is a two-hour program by veteran cartoonist Bill Barnes (Unshelled, Not Invented Here). The first part, The Basics of Cartooning, is a fast and fun workshop for middle schoolers through adult, covering every step in creating a comic strip: creating memorable characters, writing dialog, lettering, pencilling, inking, and coloring. The second part, The Technology and Business of Cartooning, is oriented towards mature teens and adults. Bill demonstrates how to use computers to create and publish comic strips to the Internet, and how to make money doing it.”- from Bill Barnes.

Microsoft Word 1: (Monday August 18th at 2:00 p.m.) We want you to become familiar with Microsoft Word 2007, so to begin we will start with basic terminology, how to accomplish everyday tasks such as creating a new document, saving a document, spell checking, change text and printing.

E-Book Reader:  (Monday August 18th at 3:00 p.m. & 6:30 p.m. Tuesday August 19th at 1:30 p.m., and Thursday at 6:00 p.m.) Covers what an e-Book reader is and provides hands on demonstration of some of the different kinds. Also teaches how to use Overdrive, a way to get e-Books through the Library.

Keyboard and Mouse Skills:  (Tuesday August 19th at 10:00 a.m.) Double-click, Right-click, Scroll… If you get overwhelmed by knowing what all to do and when to do it with your computer mouse, step into this class and learn! Your mouse and keyboard are the ways you communicate with your computer; the more you know the more you can make your computer work for you!

Clean-up Your Computer:  (Thursday August 21st at 10:00 a.m.) Is your computer running slower? Do pop-ups keep appearing? Does your computer randomly crash or freezes up? Then this may be the class for you. Clean up Your Computer shows you how to maintain your computer on both the outside and the inside. Learn what basic procedures and what free software you can use to improve the performance of your computer.

Learn the Library Webpage:  (August 21st at 3:30 p.m.) Learn everything that you have available on the library web page. How to renew books, how to search for jobs, find out important information, what books your favorite author has written. All this information will be revealed and more.


Read good books.  Watch good movies.  Have a great week.
