Pumpkin Making at the
South Sioux City Public Library
It is time to pick the pumpkins and the large squash. Library Eats will cover cooking with pumpkins on Thursday, October 9th. We will learn how to carve pumpkins and cook with the pumpkin meat.
Tangled Yarns is a group of needle workers, who are learning their craft together. They meet each Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. The group is open to the public.
Family Movie October 6th and 11th: The library is inaugurating our Family Movie Time on October 6th at 6:00 p.m. The movie is an intriguing, true tale of young Sterling North and his pet raccoon. The movie will be shown again on Saturday October 11th at 1:00 p.m.
Nancy Gillis to Speak at Writer to Writer: Nancy Gillis will speak on writing book reviews at this month’s Writer to writer meeting on Saturday October 18th at 10:00 a.m.
Nancy Gillis, of Cherokee/Muskogee/Choctaw heritage, is the retired CEO of the John Neihardt Foundation. Gillis joined the Foundation in May 1997 with experience in education and corporate administration. She regularly speaks to schools and civic groups on the work of John Neihardt, and has served on the faculty at
. First arriving to Nebraska
in 1987 to work with the Winnebago Tribe for the Reformed Church in , she
served on that denomination’s Native American Council and Commission for Race
and Ethnicity. She has also been the recipient of a fellowship from the
Smithsonian Institution to take part in Diversity Leadership and Museums
training in America She currently serves on the board of
the Nebraska Folk Life Network, and the Nebraska State Historic Preservation
Society. Washington, D.C.
The second hour of the program will be dedicated to writing news and opportunities, as well as reading and critiquing the things we have written.
Humane Society Visit October 17: Our friends from the Humane Society will be at the library on Friday October 17th at 1:30 p.m. They will bring a few of their four-footed friends and talk about pet care. October is Adopt a Shelter Pet Month.
Learn the art of Candle Making: Back in the day, candle making was an essential skill. Today candle making allows you to create candles that not only bring light to a room, but create an ambiance and therapeutic aromas. Learn the art of candle making at Club 745.5 on Thursday October 16th at 6:30 p.m. and Friday October 17th at 10:30 a.m.
Family Movie October 13th & 18th: The second installment of Family Movie Time will be held on Monday October 13th at 6:00 p.m. In this movie our hero, angered by his stern uncle, runs away from his foster home to join the circus, where he soon befriends Mr. Stubbs, the frisky chimpanzee. The movie will be repeated on Saturday October 18th at 1:00 p.m.
Cover to Cover book club will discuss the book Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins on Monday October 13th at 3:00 p.m. On October 27th they will discuss the first half of Defending Jacob by William Landay.
Technology Classes are back. The following are a list of a few of the classes for the next two weeks. Pick up a brochure with the fill listing at the circulation desk of the library, or on the library website www.southsiouxcity.org/library.
Know Your Computer (Tuesday October 14th at 10:00 a.m.): Would you like to learn the very basics of your computer? How about increase your computer vocabulary? This class will teach the very basics of computer knowledge. It will let you feel confident in knowing what all the components are on your computer.
Keyboard and Mouse Skills (Tuesday October 14th at 11:00 a.m.): Double-click, Right-click, Scroll… If you get overwhelmed by knowing what all to do and when to do it with your computer mouse, step into this class and learn! Your mouse and keyboard are the ways you communicate with your computer; the more you know the more you can make your computer work for you!
Microsoft Windows Basics 1 (Tuesday October 14th at 1:00 p.m.): We will start at the very beginning of Windows 7 with an introduction to the Desktop, Start Menu and the all new Taskbar.
E-Book Readers (Thursday October 16th at 2:00 p.m.): Covers what an e-Book reader is and provides hands on demonstration of some of the different kinds. Also teaches how to use Overdrive, a way to get e-Books through the Library.
