Cover to Cover Book Club will discuss Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford on Monday February 13^th @ 6:30pm.

February Real to Reel Rewind: Douglas Young, The Movie Guy, describes the movie as the story of: "a lonely and friendless boy finds and untangles a hurt dolphin that is caught in a crab trap. He becomes very attached to the dolphin when the tail must be taken off to save the dolphin's life. The boy believes the dolphin would be able to swim normally if it was given a prosthetic tale". The movie is scheduled for Thursday night February 9th at 6 p.m. and Saturday February 18th at 2 p.m.

Mon Feb 13, 5pm: Microsoft Excel 1: Trying to make a spreadsheet? Need a little starting guidance? We can help. We will teach all about the worksheets in Excel, how to move around the worksheet, all about the cells in the worksheet (cut copy paste) inserting rows/columns, and saving all your hard work.

Tues Feb 14, 5:30pm: Setting Up A Yahoo Email Account: If you never have had an email account this is the class for you. Yahoo email is a free email service that is very easy to sign-up for and use.

Wed Feb 15, 1pm and 6pm: E-book Readers: Covers what an e-Book reader is and provides hands on demonstration of some of the different kinds. Also teaches how to use Overdrive, a way to get e-Books through the Library.

Wed Feb 15, 2pm: Blogging Basics: We will coverhow to create a blog, use templates to create the look you want and how to add fun stuff to your blog.

Thurs Feb 16, 5pm: Microsoft Publisher 2: Learn how to use and modify Microsoft Publisher templates.

Flowers and Chocolate: This weekend many men will be heading to the store for flowers and chocolate for their sweethearts. While the library does not sell either, we have books about flowers and chocolates.

A Big Thank You

We want to give a big Thank You to the Optimist Club of Siouxland for the donation that will be put to use for our Summer Reading Program and providing fun entertainment to the youth of our community during the summer!

Robotics Club

Come and explore the exciting world of robotics using the Lego Mindstorm NXT robots at monthly meetings at the South Sioux City Library. Learn how to build and program the robot and much more through hands-on challenges.

In our February Real to Reel Movie we live with the dolphins. Douglas Young, The Movie Guy, describes the movie as the story of: "a lonely and friendless boy finds and untangles a hurt dolphin that is caught in a crab trap. Tues Feb 7, 5:30pm: How to Search the Internet: Tired of having 100,000's of results appear whenever you search the internet. Learn some of the tricks librarian's use to make your search a lot more manageable.

Wed Feb 8, 11am: Windows Basics 2: With this class we will build on the knowledge of Windows Basic and learn more about the Start Menu, where you can launch any programs installed on your computer and also search for files (pictures, videos and music) We'll also demonstrate how to "pin" your favorite programs to the Start Menu or Taskbar.

Wed Feb 8, 2pm: Twitter Basics: An introduction to signing-up, creating a profile and using the service to find friends and/ or use Twitter for a news source. Patrons will have the opportunity to have two Twitter friends by the end of the class.

Thurs Feb 9, 5pm: Microsoft Publisher 1: Microsoft Publisher is a basic course covering the types of documents that can be created, how to modify templates and how to insert text and images.

Special Movie Presentation in Memory of Audrey Murphy

The library will host a Special Movie on Wednesday February 1st at 6:30 p.m. We visit the lawless frontier village of Shinbone, a town plagued by a larger-than-life nemesis, Liberty Valance. The town lawyer and a local rancher share the same desire to rid the town of Liberty Valance and winning the hand of the same woman. The movie stars Lee Marvin, James Stewart and John Wayne. The movie is shown in memorial to Audrey Murphy, who was both a supporter of the library and a great John Wayne fan.

If you are really going to miss a football game this weekend you can try one of these titles. I Beat the Odds: from Homelessness, to the Blind Side and Beyond by Michael Oher is the story of Michael Oher of the Baltimore Ravens, whose story was popularized by the book and movie The Blind Side.

When Pride Still Mattered by David Maraniss is the story of legendary coach Vince Lombardi, who coached the Green Bay Packers to the very first NFL/ AFL championship in 1967.

The Sacred Acre: the Ed Thomas Story by Mark A. Tabb tells the story of the community of Parkersburg, Iowa, which in the same year survived an F-5 tornado and the murder of their high school football coach, Ed Thomas. This is a tremendous story from a local perspective.

Library eBook Accessibility Program (LEAP)

The following has been added to Nebraska Overdrive Libraries website.

The Nebraska OverDrive Libraries group began participating in the Library eBook Accessibility Program (LEAP) in January 2012. LEAP is the result of a partnership between OverDrive and Bookshare, a non-profit agency that provides timely eBook access to individuals with print disabilities. LEAP offers a free one-year Bookshare membership to print-disabled patrons of participating OverDrive libraries. Please note that there is no cost to our libraries and no cost to qualified patrons for participating in LEAP! Each patron's subscription at Bookshare will be paid by OverDrive for a full year. Dolphin Tale is the February Real to Reel movie for the month of February Douglas Young, The Movie Guy, describes the movie as the story of: “a lonely and friendless boy finds and untangles a hurt dolphin that is caught in a crab trap. He becomes very attached to the dolphin when the tail must be taken off to save the dolphin's life. The boy believes the dolphin would be able to swim normally if it was given a prosthetic tale”. The movie is scheduled for Thursday night February 9th at 6 p.m. and Saturday February 18th at 2 p.m.

Special Movie Presentation: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

The library will host a Special Movie Presentation of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance on Wednesday February 1st at 6:30 p.m. We visit the lawless frontier village of Shinbone, a town plagued by a larger-than-life nemesis, Liberty Valance. The town lawyer and a local rancher share the same desire to rid the town of Liberty Valance and winning the hand of the same woman. The movie stars Lee Marvin, James Stewart and John Wayne. The movie is shown in memorial to Audrey Murphy, who was both a supporter of the library and a great John Wayne fan.

Classic Movie Discussion Series

You are invited to join us for the first in our Classic Movie Discussion Series. We will discuss the remarkable, influential, and unforgettable drama tracing the rise of publishing mogul, played by Orson Welles from humble beginnings to riches and accolades beyond belief. Hellhound on his Trail by Hampton Sides tells the story of James Earl Ray and Martin Luther King Jr. as they crisscross the country from the time of Ray’s escape from prison, until the shooting of Dr. King.

An Act of State by William F. Pepper takes a look at the possibility of the government’s complicity in the death of Dr. King.

Help Yourself to a Good Time @ the Library

January Real to Reel Movie: Take a virtual trip to Mississippi with the January Real to Reel movie. Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, Skeeter is a southern society girl who returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends' lives -- and a small Mississippi town -- upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. Aibileen, Skeeter's best friend's housekeeper, is the first to open up -- to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community. Despite Skeeter's life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue their collaboration and soon more women come forward to tell their stories -- and as it turns out, they have a lot to say. The movie will be shown on Thursday night January 12th at 6pm. The movie is rated PG-13.

Cover to Cover Book Club: The Cover to Cover book club will meet on January 9^th and 23rd at 6:30pm.

On January 9^th we will discuss Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. The following is a brief description of the book: On the sixtieth anniversary of the 1942 roundup of Jews by the French police in the Vel d'Hiv section of Paris, American journalist Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article on this dark episode during World War II and embarks on an investigation that leads her to long-hidden family secrets and to the ordeal of Sarah, a young girl caught up in the raid.

On January 23rd we will discuss Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom. In this book: When an eighty-two-year-old rabbi from Albom's old hometown asks him to deliver his eulogy, Albom goes back to his nonfiction roots and becomes involved with a Detroit pastor--a reformed drug dealer and convict--who preaches to the poor and homeless in a decaying church with a hole in its roof. A timely, moving, and inspiring look at faith: not just who believes, but why.

Favorite Authors of 2011 The end of the year is accompanied by the obligatory “best of” lists for the year. The following are the ten favorite authors by circulation at the library.

1. James Patterson is a perennial favorite among adults with his Alex Cross series, but he has also made inroads among teens of late. Examples of these 2011 books are: Kill Alex Cross, The Gift and The Christmas Wedding.

2. Debbie Macomber is well known for her heartwarming stories about small time life. Her latest books are: The Perfect Christmas, 1225 Christmas Tree Lane and Trading Christmas.

3. Janet Evanovitch is an author that attracts avid fans. Once a reader is hooked on the Stephanie Plum series, there is no going back. Smokin’ Seventeen and Explosive Eighteen were the two books she published this year.

4. Nora Roberts continue to both romance and thrill her readers. This year The New Always and Chasing Fire were two of her latest releases.

5. Danielle Steel as always is in our Top 10. Hotel Ventura, Happy Birthday and 44 Charles Place are just some of her most recent works.

Top Subjects Circulated in 2011: Beyond favorite authors we also looked at the most popular subject headings circulated this year. Large print books were the most popular single subject heading for 2012. Large print books have the same look and feel today as their regular printer counterpart that means more readers will opt for the contemporary looking titles.

Rhyming stories came in second. Rhyming words seem to have a great power in helping children learn to read. This gives them continual appeal. Here is the full list of favorite subjects.

Holiday Family Movie

If you love puppies and you love the holidays join us for a family holiday movie presentation on Wednesday December 21^st at 5pm. A little sugar, a lot of fun! We are having a recipe exchange, so please plan to come. The Library is hosting a Holiday recipe exchange on Monday, December 12 from 5pm until 6:30pm in the café. If you are looking for new holiday dessert ideas, this is a great place to sample some and take the recipe home with you! If you plan on participating in this event we ask that you bring in two (2) dozen of your favorite homemade desserts (anything from cookies, brownies, fudge, bars) to share. Also please bring in the recipe for the dessert you made so we can make copies for those who wish to exchange with you.

Google Docs: (12/14 @ 2pm) This class will give learners an opportunity to learn how to create word processing documents, spreadsheets and presentations in the cloud and share them with friends.

Cover to Cover Book Club to Discuss The Last Song

Cover to Cover book club has only one meeting in December, on December 12^th at 6:30pm. They will discuss the Nicholas Sparks novel, The Last Song. This should be a fun time of discussion of a work by one of our most popular authors.

With Thanksgiving looming, the staff at the library are thinking about all things holiday.

2^nd Annual Wreath Display and Silent Auction

The South Sioux City Optimists Club will host the second annual Wreath Display and silent auction at the library on December 2^nd at 5:00 p.m. During the evening attendees will be able to place their final bids on the wreaths. A wine tasting will be held courtesy of Hy Vee Food Store in South Sioux City. Music will be provided by the New Horizons Band of Sioux City. We welcome you to attend this unforgettable night of beauty and entertainment.

Reasons for giving thanks

Last week we shared a few of the things for which the staff of the library was thankful. A few staff members added to their lists. They mentioned spending time with family and friends, but included cooking with family members during the weekend, visiting with family they did not regularly see: we wish you all the best this holiday season.

Thanks to the creation of pages for businesses, the South Sioux City Public Library is now on Google+.   Google+ is yet another way in which we are seeking to reach out to our world with library services. We are also on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Connect with us to share ideas and give us feedback on our services.
Holiday Hours
The library will open for the convenience of our patrons until 8pm Wednesday November 23^rd. We will close for the November holidays on Thursday and Friday November 24^th and 25^th. We will reopen on Saturday November 26^th at 9am.
A Time for Giving ThanksWith a little more than a month from the end of 2011, one tends to think back on that for which we are thankful. Doing a very unscientific poll of library staff as to the reasons they are thankful; I found a common refrain was that of family. Each expressed that they were thankful for the health and love of their families. A second common thought was thankfulness for a great place in which to work and great patrons to whom we give our service.
Youth Librarian, Odessa Meyer, offered this statement of thanksgiving:
“Thankfulness: is a conscious recognition of benefits received. The benefits I have received in the last couple years are too many to number. I found a place in this world and peoples lives where I believe I belong and that is an amazing feeling. I am so very thankful for all those people (family, friends and acquaintances) that have helped me find my way here. I am the person I am today because of benefits I have received from them. I am, and always will be, eternally grateful to each person who has given a smile to brighten my day, a caring word to show they care, a friendly gesture to say they were thinking of me, or even yes, a word or two that I might not have liked but needed to hear. If you are looking for new holiday dessert ideas, this is a great place to sample some and take the recipe home with you! If you plan on participating in this event we ask that you bring in two (2) dozen of your favorite homemade desserts (anything from cookies, brownies, fudge, bars) to share. Discover the Forts of Nebraska with Jeff Barnes

The library is proud to bring Jeff Barnes, author of Forts of the Northern Plains: a Guide to the Historic Military Posts of the Indian Wars to the South Sioux City Public Library on November 7, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. His topic will be Forts of Nebraska.

Jeff Barnes is a fifth-generation Nebraskan, a former newspaper reporter and editor. He is past chairman of the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission, and former marketing director for the Durham Western Heritage Museum. He traveled more than 13,000 miles in researching and photographing “Forts of the Northern Plains,” his first book.

He says of his program, “Nebraska's forts were among the first and last on the Great Plains, built to promote trade, to protect travelers and settlers, to fight the Indian tribes and then to keep the peace.” During the presentation, Barnes tells of Nebraska's 12 military forts and what today's visitors will find at the sites.

According to Jessica Chamberlain, of Northeast Library System has high praise for Jeff Barnes, “"Jeff Barnes was a tremendous speaker. He is obviously both knowledgeable and passionate about Nebraska history. The audience was absolutely enthralled."

Forts of Nebraska is one of approximately 300 programs offered through the Nebraska Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. The more than 165 available speakers include acclaimed scholars, writers, musicians, storytellers and folklorists on topics ranging from pioneer heritage to ethics and law to international and multicultural issues, making it the largest humanities speakers’ bureau in the nation.

Most speakers are available to any non-profit organization in Nebraska at the cost of just $50 for each. Each program lasts 30 minutes to an hour, plus a question-and-answer period.

The most frequent users of the NHC Speakers Bureau are primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, libraries, museums and historical societies, agencies for the elderly, rural organizations, churches, arts organizations and ethnic organizations. The Nebraska Humanities Council sponsors the largest Speakers Bureau program in the

U.S.

according to the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Movie Mayhem

With the coming of the Thanksgiving holiday comes holiday travel and travel is the theme of our movies this week. On Thursday, November 10^th at 4 p.m. the children will love our movie in which characters created by Jim Henson travel cross-country in a bighearted adventure.

Also on November 10^th at 6 p.m. our Real to Reel movie will be a travel comedy starring Steve Martin and John Candy, in which every holiday traveler’s worst nightmare is realized in this 1987 holiday comedy.

South Sioux City Middle School & Public Library is pleased to announce that award-winning children’s and teen author Neal Shusterman will speak at South Sioux City Middle School on Thursday, October 27^that 2:00. During his visits to schools and public libraries during the week-long tour across Nebraska, Mr. Shusterman will talk about and read from his book “Unwind,” discuss the craft of writing, address the topic of publishing, field questions from the audience, and autograph books.
Mr. Shusterman’s book “Unwind” is the One Book for Nebraska Teens selection for 2010-2011. One Book for Nebraska Teens, sponsored by the Nebraska Library Commission, encourages teens across Nebraska to read and discuss the same book.
The author tour is hosted by the Nebraska Library Commission and Nebraska’s Regional Library Systems, funded in part by the Nebraska Arts Council, Nebraska Humanities Council, and Nebraska Cultural Endowment.

OMAHA—As floodwaters recede along the Missouri River, property owners face some tough questions. Are trees in damaged areas still alive? Are they safe to walk under, drive under? Are root systems exposed or buried under debris? What can be done to assess present, and even future, damage? Are there things that can be done to minimize damage done by the flooding?

A series of workshops from Nebraska Forest Service is designed to answer questions about landscape care related to flooding. Graham Herbst of the Nebraska Forest Service said the goal is to get as much information out as possible, “to minimize the risk to people, property and infrastructure.”

Herbst said the free sessions aimed at homeowners will include a panel discussion by tree care professionals and will allow time for questions and answers. If participants want to bring photos of flood damage, Herbst said, they will address individual issues as time allows. In Omaha, a workshop for tree industry and government professionals will precede the homeowner workshop. The sessions willbe taped for an online video series to be available at a later date.

Your Byway Adventure Begins at the Library

The library is your first stop on the westward journey on the Highway 12; See the Byway the Quilt Way event on October 7-9. The library meeting room and Coffee Shoppe area will host a display of quilts and presentations on Friday and Saturday. The hours for the quilt show are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Banned books Week September 24-October 1

Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted banning of books across the United States. Watch for Banned Book Week displays at the library.

Play Board Games with the South Sioux City Public Library During the Million Minute Challenge

South Sioux City, Nebraska -In this fast-paced world, today’s family usually has a busy schedule that often sends each member in different directions. From work, to sporting events, to band rehearsals, families struggle to sit down and do something together for longer than a few minutes.

The South Sioux City Public Library along with Patch Products, creator of the Million Minute Family Challenge™, are determined to reverse that trend by bringing families and friends together with the 11th annual Million Minute Family Challenge. The Million Minute Family Challenge encourages interaction and communication among family and friends by setting a national goal of playing games for a total of one million minutes from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31.

To help reach the one million minutes, the South Sioux City Public Library, 2121 Dakota Avenue South Sioux City, Nebraska will host a number of game nights throughout the month of September:
Thursday September 1 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.

Tuesday September 6 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.

Friday September 16 from 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

Monday September 19 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.

Wednesday September 28 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.

The South Sioux City Public Library encourages community members to attend their event or host one of their own!

With many people keeping a close eye on their spending habits and cutting back on vacations, movies, takeout and more, game nights are the perfect opportunity to spend valuable time with others without breaking the bank. Game nights provide a dedicated time when family and friends can get away from outside distractions and focus on enjoying each other.

“When friends or family play games together, everyone has a healthy productive and enjoyable time. Everyone benefits,” said Stevanne Auerbach, speaker, author and consultant known as Dr. Toy. “Most of all, everyone enjoys those special game times and taking things a little slower than going all the time at the speed of light.”

Last year, a total of 851 groups, clubs, classrooms, libraries and families surpassed the one million minutes goal with an impressive 1,063,129 game-playing minutes logged! Will the record be broken again this year? Give it a try and get your friends and family in on the fun. You have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.

Dates to Remember at the Library

September is Library Card Sigh-up Month. If you don’t have one, stop by the library and get one. Bring a picture ID and another form of ID with your name and current address. Children under 16 must have a parent sigh for their library card.

Labor Day is September 5th. Celebrate the last major holiday of the summer with your family and friends. The library will close on 3rd at 5 p.m. and reopen on September 6th at 9 a.m.

Midday at the Library : 9/11 10 Years After Book Talk September 8th. Dan Nieman will do a book talk on books related to the September 11, 2001 incident on Thursday August 8th at 12:30 p.m.

Patriot Day September 11th. Commemorate Patriot’s Day by flying the American flag today. Watch for special ceremonies connected to this day.

Banned books Week September 24-October 1 Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States. The Youth Department of the library is sponsoring two new programs this fall.

The library is promoting the Million Minute Family Challenge from September 1-December 31.

The Million Minute Family Challenge is an easy way to give incentive to families spending time together.

Watch for event s at the library that promote family time together. Plan to bring your family to game days at the library this fall.

The South Sioux City Public Library is proud to bring The Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo to the South Sioux City Public Library on Tuesday night August 23rd at 7:00 p.m.

The Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo not only celebrate the tradition of guitar performance of the old and the current rapport but also as composers they are a part of a movement in the states who’s aim is to build the new repertoire for the next generation of guitar players.

Steel string ten finger tapping guitar prodigy Andreas Kapsalis, and nylon string classical guitarist Goran Ivanovic have fused their musical roots with modern, classical, world, jazz and beyond in this experimental duo.

As they continue to create "buzz" throughout global music circles, these masterful musicians are also creating genres & musical styles that have yet to be named.

There is no charge for this event, but a suggested donation of $10 is greatly appreciated. A Summer Reading Program Food Finale

Dylan McGuire earned the opportunity to throw a variety of world foods into the face of South Sioux City Library Director, David W. Mixdorf. Dylan read for fifteen hours during the 2011 Summer Reading Program and used the book bucks he earned to win the privilege.

Symphony No. 3, Op. 42, Albert Roussel description from Alexander Street Press.

Albert Roussel (1869-1937) is an early twentieth-century French composer. He was raised by various members of his extended family, and did not begin to study music until 1894, when he resigned from the French navy to pursue music. He married Blanche Preisach in 1908. Despite his resignation from the navy twenty years previously, he fought in World War I. As for many of his generation, the experience seems to have deeply affected him--his style of composition became less rococo. After years of indifferent health, he died of a heart attack in 1937.

The Third Symphony was written to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1930. In this piece, as with many of his later pieces, flute is featured prominently throughout the work. Download

SSC Library is Reorganizing Their Book Sale

The South Sioux City Public Library, 2121 Dakota Avenue, South Sioux City Nebraska is busy restructuring its book sale. As a result, the library will NOT have a monthly book sale on Saturday, July 29th.

The library has received an abundance of donations this summer library staff have not had the opportunity to process everything received. One of the reasons for the influx of donations was concerns about the flooding. We have materials stored in various parts of the library, without the manpower to set up a monthly book sale, along with the regular work of the library.

The library is also seeking volunteers to aid in future book sales. We are looking for people who will come in the day before the book sale to set up and display sale items on tables. The library is also seeking volunteers to work the day of the sale and help take down the sale items. Future book sales will be scheduled based on the ability of the library to recruit those volunteers.

The library plans to have a large book sale later this fall. Dates and times will be announced later. To volunteer, you may contact Library Director, Dave Mixdorf at 402-494-7545.
